Widely admired for protecting his people and speaking the truth, he is honored with this design, symbolizing bravery. Bold arrowheads represent the chief’s courage, strength and integrity. In 1923, President Harding and his wife visited the West to dedicate a portion of the old Oregon Trail. At that ceremony, local Cayuse and Umatilla chiefs presented Mrs. Harding with a Pendleton shawl modelled after the famed Chief Joseph blanket.
